• Took on a number of diverse internal Research and Development projects, using both Waterfall and Agile methodologies.

L3Harris Communication Systems West is a defense contractor in the Salt Lake Valley providing secure, robust communication systems. Currently I work in System Software writing safety critical C++, predominantly in the areas of hardware control and communication interfaces. Due to the sensitive nature of the work I have to avoid specifics, but what follows are a few of my favorite projects that I’ve been involved in at L3Harris.

Process Improvement Tools

Some of my favorite projects are tools I’ve developed in my free time to improve development processes at L3Harris, including BUpdate and L3Dockerize. L3Harris CSW has a well-developed software configuration management system due to the safety requirements imposed on the software, and I’ve taken advantage of these systems to build tools with the potential to save hundreds of hours of Engineering time.

Specialized RF Equipment Control Software

One such project was the design, implementation and verification of an alternative control plane for a set of legacy RF equipment in order to extend the functionality of the equipment and enable new features. Many sets of the equipment were already deployed to the field, but new functionality was required in order to utilize the equipment with cutting-edge L3Harris software and hardware. Due to the strict requirements for the control plane, this project involved unorthodox control schemes that added a substantial amount of complexity to the software. This effort gave me the opportunity to act as a de-facto software lead, providing direction to a small team and delivering overall project status to organization management.

Software Baseline Development

A common area of work was the development of common software baselines for use by other engineering groups. Through the development of these baselines, I was tasked with design, implementation, and integration tasks for service-oriented components relating to nearly every aspect of radio system control. These baselines were implemented with an emphasis on robustness, maintainability and reusability. Due to their consumption by other engineering groups, quality standards for these baselines are high and best practices are essential.
